Self-Guided Walking Holidays Slovenia's Julian Alps and Triglav National Park

   Overview
Triglav and Julian Alps  9 Days / 8 Nights  Grade B/C: Trails / Mountains

The wondrous Julian Alps are relatively undiscovered and undeveloped - making this area a walker's dream. Sharp limestone summits, densely wooded valleys and beautiful emerald rivers tumbling through rocky gorges characterise this area of Slovenia. Located on the borders of Austria and Italy, the Julian Alps have a unique charm of their own - softer, simpler, less busy and yet somewhat cosmopolitan in feel due to the influences of their near neighbours.

The Triglav National Park is one of Europe's oldest parks dating from 1906 and it now covers almost the entire area of the Eastern Julian Alps. Within its 84,000 hectares you will find the symbolic Mt Triglav (2864m) and a wealth of deep gorges, ancient forests, a wealth of Alpine flora and fauna and the impressive cultural and historical heritage of this proud country.

This walking holiday is available from May to October but is particularly scenic in the springtime and early summer when the hills are in full bloom. Conversely, the weather is more stable at the end of the season - but whatever time you walk here, you can experience the pleasures of Slovenia and its warm and welcoming people.

Your accommodation on this tour is in our choice of local 4-star hotels. With dinners and breakfasts included, all you need do is ask why you have not yet visited this delightful country - once hidden from Western tourists but now open for all to experience its delights.

   Itinerary

Slovenian mountain lake

Day 1 (Arrival)
Met by our transport you are transferred from Ljubljana airport to Kranjska Gora (75 minute transfer approx). The town of Kranjska Gora is in the north-west of Slovenia, close to both the Austrian and Italian borders. You have time to relax before dinner or to explore the lovely Zgornjesavska valley.

Day 2 (20km Kranjska Gora Circular)
Starting from our base you start to ascend through woods of hazelnut, chestnut and birch to arrive at high plateau with breathtaking views across the Italian and Austrian Alps. You continue on to have lunch in the Martuljek gorge before descending gently through meadows awash with orchids, narcissi and blue gentian as you head back by the entrance of the Triglav National Park and Kranjska Gora.

Day 3 (12km Kranjska Gora to Bovec)
Your day starts with a breathtaking drive up to the Vrsic Pass (1611m). From here you can continue with your luggage or elect to walk along a beautiful path along the turquoise Soca River as it tumbles through limestone gorges. you ahev linch along the way at the Metoja mountain restaurant. As you continue on in the afternoon the Trenta mountain range fills the horizon with the imposing peaks of Javorscek, Svinjak and Romsom reaching above you. You head on to the Jelicnic refuge for a refreshing drink and then take the lift down to Bovec for your evening meal.

Crossing one of many suspension bridgesDay 4 (14km Bovec Circular.)
Leaving Bovec you ascend on a trail that climbs through bluebells and primula auricola and then on past the dramatic Koritnica Gorge to Kluze fortress - a WWI stronghold which stands at the top of a narrow canyon and a site that has been fortified since at least the 15th century. The mountain range of Bovec was fiercely fought over in the WWI. Returning to your hotel in plenty of time for dinner, there is time to relax on the alpine terrace of your hotel and to enjoy its amazing views.

Day 5 (20km Bovec to Kobarid)
Leaving Bovec you head off underneath the Kanin mountain range across meadows of brightly coloured wildflowers to reach the Boka waterfall with its impressive 106m free drop and a further 30m of tumbling cascades below. You then continue alongside the Soca River to Trnovo where you can enjoy a picnic (and a paddle) if you wish! In the afternoon you follow an ancient Roman path that leads into Kobarid and one of the friendliest, family-run hotels we have ever come across. The restaurant here is locally renowned - serving local specialities such as trout and fresh water crayfish, as well as mushrooms and truffles in season.

Day 6 (7km Kobarid Circular)
Your second day at Kobarid is an easy one. It is difficult to imagine that this small and amiable little town witnessed the historic WWI battle that inspired Hemmingway’s “A Farewell to Arms”. There is a historical trail past the old Austro-Italian defences and which offers breathtaking views of Soca Valley. Alternatively (or in addition) the award-winning First World War Museum is certainly worth a visit. If you prefer taking the day off driving into the nearby Vipava vineyards, then car hire can be arranged locally.

Day 7 (11km Kobarid to Bohinj or 8km walk)
Your route today takes you on the high mountain path to Globoko pass (1828m) where you can enjoy a panoramic picnic. On your descent you are rewarded with glorious sweeping vistas of Mt Triglav and shimmering below you the waters of Lake Bohinj. Finally you take the cable car down to your hotel on the lake shore. Alternatively you can take an easy option today. Embark on a panoramic railway journey to Bohinj, with views along the way as far as the Gulf of Venice. You then follow a circular path around the lake to reach the hotel.

Day 8 (At Bohinj)
Your final day is spent in the environs of the 4-star Hotel Jezero which is ideally placed to make the most of Lake Bohinj. You could perhaps hire a rowing boat or swim in the lake's clear azure waters. For the more energetic, there is still the opportunity for some walking - following the narrow Mostnica Gorge up to Devil’s Bridge - where, according to legend, only the virtuous can pass as the bridge can sense bad intentions! Continuing on to the Mostnica Waterfall at the end of the Voje Valley, you then have an easy walk back with time perhaps for a dip in the hotel’s indoor pool before your final dinner.
